Russian Attack on Odessa: Implications for Ukrainian and International Shipping

2023-07-20 16:56:00

Vladimir Putin now threatens not only Ukrainian ships, but all ships. Meanwhile, the United States is warning of attacks on civilian shipping – and other sea mines.

Twelve hours following the Russian attack on Odessa city center, the fire is still smoldering. Factories, an administration building from the Soviet era and warehouses on the edge of the port were hit. The city administration avoids giving precise details because they don’t want to show the Russians how successful the 19 cruise missiles and Shahed drones were.

What is clear, however, is that Russia has found a weak point in Ukraine with its third attack on the Odessa area. Because only 18 of the 38 drones and missiles might be destroyed by the air defense, including 13 drones, as Air Force spokesman Yuri Ihnat announced in Kiev. In contrast, the seven “Onyx” supersonic cruise missiles fired by the Black Sea Fleet proved invincible. They fly just a few meters above sea level at speeds of up to 3500 km/h. The air defenses near Odessa and Mikolayev were also unable to do anything once morest the three Ch-22 missiles.

The consequences of the attacks: at least three fatalities and 32 injured in the two southern Ukrainian oblasts. In addition, thousands of tons of grain were once more destroyed.
