The Russian security services (FSB) announced on Friday the arrest of two Russians accused of having provided intelligence to Ukraine, in particular on the positions of Moscow forces involved in the assault once morest the neighboring country.
Since the start of the conflict, almost two years ago, the authorities have arrested numerous Russians suspected of collaborating with kyiv to transmit information or prepare acts of sabotage.
These two people, whose identities have not been specified, were arrested in Rostov-on-Don, a southern city close to Ukraine and which has become an operational center for Russian forces.
Suspected of “high treason”, a crime punishable by up to 20 years in prison, they were placed in pre-trial detention, Russian services said in a press release.
The authorities assure that they came into contact with a member of the Ukrainian special services and “transmitted information regarding the Russian armed forces” participating in the offensive once morest Ukraine.
The two Russians allegedly provided, for a fee, data on “the location of military equipment and personnel” of the army, according to the FSB.
Beyond the arrests of citizens suspected of working on behalf of kyiv, Russian justice is also severely punishing critics of the assault on Ukraine.
Thousands of ordinary Russians have been fined or given long prison terms for this reason since February 2022.
