Russian and Chinese foreign ministers discuss situation in Kazakhstan

The Russian and Chinese foreign ministers spoke by telephone on Monday regarding the latest developments in Kazakhstan.

According to the Russian Foreign Ministry, Sergei Lavrov and Wang Yi have both strongly supported the efforts of the Kazakh government to restore order in the country.

During their talk, concerns were expressed regarding the influence of foreign powers in the events in Kazakhstan, and it was noted that Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has taken timely and proportionate action once morest these threats.

Some 164 people, including a 4-year-old girl, were killed in protests that lasted a week in Kazakhstan, the Khabar 24 news channel reported, citing the health ministry.

President Tokayev has declared a state of emergency in the city of Almaty and the oil-rich Mangystau region, from which protests have spread to the rest of the country.
