“Yesterday, in the early evening hours of 27/07/2023, officers of the Inspectorate of the Foreign Police at Václav Havel International Airport carried out a residence check on a person of Russian nationality, during which the reasons for the termination of their stay in the territory were determined. The person was issued an exit order and given a deadline to leave from the Czech Republic,” the Police of the Czech Republic said regarding the situation.
The management of the tournament also commented on the police’s actions. “She was the first participant in the tournament who arrived in the Czech Republic with a Russian passport. At the moment, it is no longer in the territory of the Czech Republic. We immediately informed all other participants of the tournament with Russian or Belarusian citizenship regarding the situation through the WTA, when they were told not to travel to the upcoming tournament,” said tournament director Miroslav Malý.
The organizers do not expect that any of the other Russian and Belarusian tennis players would try to travel to the Czech Republic and participate in the tournament.
The editors of Sport.cz asked regarding the police’s procedure on Thursday, and the police spokesperson announced at the time that the police intended to proceed proactively in the case.
“The police of the Czech Republic perceives the whole situation and is carefully monitoring the women’s tennis tournament, in which female athletes from Russia and Belarus most likely want to participate,” the press spokesman of the foreign police, Josef Urban, replied to Sport.cz’s questions.
“In the event that the Police of the Czech Republic discovers that the foreigner no longer fulfills the conditions of the granted visa (purpose of stay, accommodation, means of stay, health insurance, etc.), it will proceed in accordance with legal regulations and proceed to deny entry in accordance with Article 14 of the Schengen Borders Code or, in the event that they enter the territory within the Schengen area, proceed to cancel the short-term visa in accordance with Article 34, paragraph 2 of the Regulation of the European Parliament and of the Council No. 810/2009, Visa Code. Police of the Czech Republic is ready to proceed proactively in accordance with legal regulations and Resolution of the Government of the Czech Republic No. 480/20223,” Urban said on Thursday.
