The Washington Post reported on the 7th, citing people familiar with the matter, that former U.S. President Trump privately claimed that he might bring an end to the Russian-Ukrainian war that had raged for more than two years by pressuring Kyiv to give up some of its territory in Ukraine that is now controlled by Moscow. However, some foreign policy experts bluntly stated that such an idea would reward Russian President Vladimir Putin and condone violations of internationally recognized state-to-state boundaries through the use of force.
Trump’s proposal includes prompting Kiev to cede the Crimean peninsula and the eastern Donbas border region to Moscow, according to people who have discussed the plan with Trump and his aides. The report said that this approach, which has not been disclosed in the past, will run counter to the policies of US President Biden, who has emphasized stopping Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and military aid to Ukraine.
Trump, who is almost certain to be the Republican candidate in November’s U.S. presidential election, has repeatedly claimed that if he is elected, a Russia-Ukraine peace agreement can be negotiated in less than 24 hours, and he does not even have to wait until he takes office in January next year. But he has repeatedly refused to publicly detail his vision for a quick resolution to the war.
Several pro-Sichuan foreign policy think tanks have so far focused on resolving the threat posed by mainland China to U.S. interests, seeking to reverse Russia’s increasing reliance on China for military, industrial and economic purposes, and support limiting the expansion of NATO.
A person who has discussed the matter directly with Trump mentioned that Trump privately said that he felt that Russia and Ukraine wanted to “save face” and find a solution. Trump also believes that residents of some parts of Ukraine can accept becoming part of Russia.
However, the report stated that if the reality that Russia controls part of Ukraine’s territory is accepted, Russia under Putin’s dictatorship will expand its territory following Europe’s largest land war since World War II. Ashford, a researcher at the Stimson Center, a think tank in Washington, said that exchanging territory for a ceasefire without guaranteeing that Russia will not rearm its arms and invade once more will put Ukraine in a worse situation.
