On Saturday, the Kremlin issued a warning: the deployment of long-range U.S. missiles in Germany might inadvertently turn European capitals into targets for Russian missiles. This escalation evokes the chilling specter of a new Cold War confrontation.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov highlighted the “paradox” that “Europe is within range of our missiles, and our country is within range of American missiles in Europe.”
“We possess sufficient capacity to counter these missiles, but the potential victims are the capitals of these countries,” he informed Russia 1 state television.
Peskov hinted that such a confrontation would destabilize Europe as a whole.
In response to the suggestion from his interlocutor, Pavel Zarubin, that the Cold War ended with the collapse of the Soviet Union, Peskov declared that “Europe is not in the best shape”, issuing a stark warning of “a repetition of history with a different formula”.
The White House announced on Wednesday during a NATO summit that the U.S. plans to deploy new missiles in Germany starting in 2026. These missiles will have a longer range than the American systems currently deployed in Europe.
A joint statement issued by the U.S. presidency and the German government indicated that “these advanced capabilities will demonstrate the United States’ commitment to NATO and its contributions to integrated European deterrence.”
The Kremlin denounced the move, accusing Washington of escalating towards a new Cold War and becoming a direct participant in the Ukrainian conflict.
