Russia tests engine for new Angara missiles

On the sidelines of the Army-2024 forum, the company’s general director, Igor Arbuzov, said: “We are completing tests on the RD-191M engine, which is intended for the new Russian Angara-A5M missiles, and by the end of this year it will be delivered to the Russian Khrunichev Center, which manufactures these missiles, and next year we will deliver the center the second batch of these engines.”

“Ground tests on the new engine are currently in their final stages. The main phase of testing has been completed, the engine’s specifications have been verified to meet the required specifications, and we have developed a digital version of this engine, which once again confirms our organization’s ability to develop reliable space engines,” he added.

Roscosmos had previously indicated that the RD-191M engine runs on kerosene and liquid oxygen, and is an upgraded version of the RD-191 engines that Russia previously developed for Angara rockets, but it provides 10% more thrust, which will make the Angara-A5M rockets capable of carrying large payloads into space. The first launch of these rockets from the Vostochny spaceport is expected to take place in 2027.

It is worth noting that Energomash had also developed the RD-171MV engine, which weighs 10 tons and is classified as the most powerful liquid-fuel rocket engine in the world, and is supposed to be used in the Russian Soyuz-5 rockets.
