In its war once morest Ukraine, Russia will have taken a week to conquer a major city. During the night of Wednesday to Thursday, Russian forces took Kherson, in the south of the country and not far from Crimea. The mayor of this city of 290,000 inhabitants, Igor Kolykhaiev, announced that he had discussed with “armed guests” in a building of the administration of Kherson, implying, without naming them, Russian troops. Russia’s military advance comes especially just before talks this Thursday morning around a ceasefire to which it has agreed.

The General Assembly on Wednesday adopted a resolution which “demands that Russia immediately cease the use of force once morest Ukraine”, in a vote overwhelmingly approved by 141 countries, 5 opposing it, and 35 s abstaining, including China, out of the Organization’s 193 members. Led by the European Union in coordination with Ukraine, the text also “deplores” “in the strongest terms Russia’s aggression once morest Ukraine” and affirms “its attachment to sovereignty, independence, unity and territorial integrity” of this country.
A week following the start of the war in Ukraine, Emmanuel Macron, during a televised address, showed his desire to seek a peaceful way out of the conflict at all costs. For the President of the Republic, “Russia is not attacked, it is the aggressor”.
He announced “stay in contact as much as necessary with President Putin to convince him to give up arms”. The Head of State once once more highlighted the ambition of a European Defence. A summit on the subject is scheduled for March 10 and 11 in Versailles with the countries concerned.
