Russia.. New technology to extract dyes and pharmaceutical materials from wood waste

“Scientists from the Siberian Federal University and the Institute of Chemistry and Chemical Technology of the Russian Academy of Sciences have developed a new technology that helps extract dyes and some pharmaceutical substances from wood waste,” the press service of the Russian Ministry of Education said in a statement.

“With the help of new technology, we will be able to obtain dyes used in dyeing fabrics and in various types of paint. This method also enables us to obtain lignin polymers, which is a common component in plant biomass. Lignin is a substance found in large quantities in wood factories, and is considered a waste resulting from the manufacture of wood chemicals. It is potentially dangerous when fires break out, so it is good to exploit it and purify factory areas from it,” the statement added.

“The new method for obtaining lignin polymers from wood waste is based on nitrogen-sulfur coupling reactions. In this way, waste is converted into valuable products that can be used in the manufacture of medicines and creams that protect the skin from ultraviolet rays and prevent sunburn. These materials can also be used in the manufacture of electronic products, such as television screens,” said Viktor Golubkov, one of the participants in the aforementioned project.
