Russia celebrates this year the 150th anniversary of the birth of the great composer, Sergey Rachmaninov (1873-1943).

On this occasion, festive cultural events are held throughout the country, including the Rachmaninov family estate Ivanovka (Rachmaninoff Museum), located in the Russian province of Tambov, where last week the first concert of the “Sergei Rachmaninov’s Operas” festival was held.

“The concert was attended by stars of Moscow’s opera theaters, including artists and opera singers at the Bolshoi Theater and the Moscow Conservatory, and professors and students at the Moscow Academic Musical Theatre,” said Irina Vanovskaya, an employee of the museum.

The singer at the Moscow Musical Theatre, Oksana Korneevskaya, and the professor at the Moscow Conservatory, Yelena Savelieva, presented excerpts from Rakhmanov’s opera “Uliko”, accompanied by the State Symphony Orchestra and the Russian Radio and Television Corporation’s choir.

“Oliko” is the first opera composed by Sergei Rachmaninov, who was then 19 years old, following graduating from the Moscow Conservatory.

Within the framework of this festival, 5 more concerts will be held, where artists will perform not only Rakhmaninov’s compositions, but also romantic songs, scenes from the operas “Glinka”, “Dagomishki”, “Sviridov” and others.
