Russia carried out air strikes in Kiev on Sunday night as part of its war of aggression against Ukraine. The mayor of the Ukrainian capital, Vitaly Kryshko, said the air defense system was put into use. Witnesses and journalists reported several explosions. The Ukrainian Air Force announced through the messaging service Telegram that Kiev, surrounding areas and the entire eastern Ukraine are on alert.

Explosions could be heard in the city center and in the east, according to reporters from AFP and Reuters. Ukraine’s air force said two Russian missiles targeted the capital. In addition, five other regions were also attacked by Russian drones. Kiev’s military authorities reported the activation of the air defense system on the Telegram online service. There were no initial reports of injuries or property damage.

There are fears Russia may launch airstrikes against Ukraine in response to a five-day advance by Ukrainian troops into Russia’s western border region of Kursk. Ukrainian troops have apparently advanced dozens of kilometers into the Kursk region since the advance began on Tuesday, according to independent observers. On Sunday evening, Russian sources said that a Ukrainian drone injured 13 people in the Kursk region.

According to Russia’s state nuclear energy company Rosatom, the Kursk nuclear power plant is operating normally. However, due to the state of emergency, it was decided to reduce the number of workers when building a new factory in the area. According to the RIA Novosti news agency, Rosatom President Alexey Likhachev had a phone call with the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Rafael Grossi, to discuss the situation of nuclear power plants in the border areas of Ukraine.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky commented on the offensive for the first time in an evening speech on Saturday night, saying Kiev was trying to “shift” the war to Russia.

Russia launches massive drone and missile attacks on Ukrainian cities almost every night. Since February 2022, Ukraine has been defending itself against Russia’s war of aggression. President Zelenskyy has been urging allies for weeks to quickly deliver new air defense systems.
