The eastern city of Bakhmut has become a prime target for Russian troops, a Ukrainian military official said on Sunday.
Serhii Cherevatyi, spokesman for the Eastern Group of the country’s armed forces, said Ukrainian troops were holding out in Bakhmut, describing the situation as “very difficult, but under control.”
The Russian units seemed to have made some progress in the city a few days ago, although they also seemed to be taking heavy casualties.
“Bajmut has become the number one target of the occupation army to break through our defense, to reach the direction of Pokrovsk, Sloviansk, Kramatorsk… to demonstrate at least some success of their units directly on the battlefield,” he said. Cherevatyi.
Meanwhile, in the Kherson region, the head of the regional military administration, Yaroslav Yanushevych, said Russian forces have once more shelled residential areas.
That included attacks on private apartment buildings and other civilian infrastructure, according to Yanushevych.
A civilian in Kherson was killed and two wounded on Saturday, he said.
Ukrainian authorities say Russia left behind numerous mines, tripwires and other dangerous objects throughout the Kherson region, and the National Police reported seizing 4,200 explosive devices and destroying another 1,250.
In the city of Kherson, crews have restored electricity supply, and around 75% of the community had access to electricity as of Sunday morning, according to the regional military administration.
