This week, NATO is holding the major military exercise Nordic Response 2024, which will involve more than 20,000 troops in Norway, Finland and Sweden and focuses on collective defense, according to alliance announcements.
It is the largest North Atlantic Treaty Organization exercise since the end of the Cold War in the northern reaches of Europe in an area where for years Finnish and Swedish troops have held exercises together, but the recent enlargement of NATO gives a further dimension to this alliance.
The war in Ukraine has sparked the deepest crisis in Russia’s relations with the West since the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis, and President Vladimir Putin has warned the West that it risks provoking a nuclear war if it sends Western troops to fight in Ukraine.
