Russia is taking unprecedented measures against others, with the presidential elections in 2024 in mind, which should extend Vladimir Putin’s long reign at least until the 2030s.
Under the new rules being drafted, foreigners would have to comply with strict laws that prohibit criticism of the war in Ukraine and not make statements in favor of the LGBTIQ community, state news agency TASS reported.
Based on the draft document, TASS stated that foreigners “entering Russia will agree to comply with the prohibitions introduced to protect Russia’s national interests, not to discredit Russia’s (…) state foreign and domestic policy in any form.”
Foreigners would also be prohibited under Russian law from sharing public information about LGBTIQ relationships, “distorting the historical truth” about the Soviet Union’s role in World War II.
TASS said the document will soon be submitted to the State Duma, Russia’s lower house of parliament.
The report did not say what punishments could be faced by those who violated the agreement.
The Kremlin declined to comment on the planned new rules to reporters on Wednesday.
A large part of foreigners in Russia consists of migrants from Central Asia, who are now even trying to enlist in the army to fight in Ukraine.
Many Westerners left Russia after Moscow attacked the neighboring country in February last year.
Western media outlets have drastically reduced the number of their representatives in Russia, fearing for the safety of staff following the introduction of strict censorship laws.
Russia has already punished thousands of its citizens for criticizing the attack in Ukraine under censorship laws.
