The journal Solar Energy Materials and Solar Cells reports that the university scientists decided to invent a new type of solar panel that generates electricity and allows light to pass through at the same time. For this, the solar cells must be made of artificial crystalline materials – perovskites, and their operation requires the presence of special electrodes that are transparent and have the property of conducting electricity.
The university scientists point out that the method used in the production of high-efficiency solar batteries is not suitable for magnetron sputtering, as magnetron sputtering in this way has many drawbacks, as it damages the perovskite layer and other layers, which leads to a decrease in the efficiency of solar panels.
In order to overcome these drawbacks, the university scientists propose using the ion beam method to spray tin and indium oxide, which, according to them, gives the desired properties without using high temperatures and without damaging the layers of solar panels.
Transparent solar cells made by the researchers using the proposed method showed an increase in efficiency from 3.12 percent to 12.65 percent.
According to researcher Lev Luchnikov, this method will allow to create two types of solar cells – tandem cells (a multilayer photovoltaic structure, in which two or more photovoltaic materials are connected in series to use sunlight more efficiently by increasing the spectral absorption width of radiation) and transparent cells that can be installed in the windows of buildings, where in addition to generating electricity, they allow visible light to pass through.
The researchers believe this property will allow architects and designers to integrate solar cells into windows, facades and other structural elements of buildings in a variety of ways.
