Russian authorities said on Tuesday that heavy rain had inundated several villages in Yakutia, in Russia’s Far East region.
Yakutia has been severely affected over the past summers by extreme weather events – including forest fires and floods – that scientists say are linked to climate change.
Such extreme weather events are expected to become more frequent, prolonged and severe in the future.

She added that dozens of people had to leave their homes.
“Due to the heavy rains that fell on July 11 despite the deployment of a protective structure, a dam collapsed and almost completely flooded the village of Petkis,” the Yakutia government wrote on Telegram.

The small village is located on the banks of the Adisha River in northeastern Siberia
The local government said that at 7:00 am the water level reached the level of one thousand centimeters (33 feet).
She added that the floods inundated 36 homes and more than 100 plots of land.
And she added that dozens of people moved to shelters, while 72 others stayed with relatives.
The local government has released pictures of rescue teams on a small boat transporting horses through the flooded village surrounded by wooden houses that sank under water.
She also said authorities were working to move supplies to other flooded villages.
And posted on Telegram a video clip of a small plane loaded with more than two tons of food for flood victims in the remote village of Surdakh in the western part of Yakutia.
The plane will then transport the elderly and children from the village to Yakutsk, the capital of the region.
Authorities said floods in recent days have damaged 85 homes in Surdakh, where 317 people live.
In the past, Russian President Vladimir Putin made statements questioning the phenomenon of climate change, but in recent years he ordered his government to protect Russia from the effects of climate fluctuations.
