Russia evacuates parts of the Belgorod region

“There is hostile activity on the border of Krasnoyarushsky District,” regional governor Vyacheslav Gladkov said in a video on the online service Telegram. “For the health and safety of our population,” people would be taken to “safer places.”

Last week, Ukrainian troops crossed the border into the western Russian region of Kursk and advanced several kilometers into Russian territory. According to information from Kiev, thousands of Ukrainian soldiers are involved in the offensive.

Several evacuations since the beginning of the war

The Belgorod region, which borders Kursk, is regularly the target of Ukrainian air and drone strikes in retaliation for attacks by the Russian side. According to official figures, around 14,000 people live in the district. Since the start of the Russian offensive in Ukraine in February 2022, evacuations have been ordered several times in this region.
