Russia – A student at the Lugansk Civil Engineering College, Ilya Bendovsky, has developed a prototype of a bioelectronic arm intended for working with hazardous chemical compounds.
They can also be used in working with radiation sources and other toxic materials that can harm humans. In addition, the innovation can be used as a prosthetic for those who have lost a limb, and it is much cheaper than similar ones on the market.
The arm’s inventor said: “By using biosensors worn on the hand, we can completely replace the human hand.” The main trend here, of course, is to use the arm in various dangerous environments. In this case, the arm is made of plastic as an experimental option, but if we replace it, for example, with plastic, it can be used in any environment that poses a danger to humans.”
He added that similar research and development has been going on for a long time, but its price is much higher than the presented model. Production costs were reduced by replacing foreign components with their local counterparts and developing special programs for them. In addition, the bionic arm can be modified using Bluetooth systems, WI-FI and a wireless transmitter, which will allow the implant to be controlled remotely without resorting to a remote control.
He went on to say: “We can control it remotely even using a smartphone. It all depends on our needs, i.e. where and how this innovation will be used. “We can say that this is one function of our arm, and there is another function, which is the ability to modify and adapt it to any task.” He added, “If necessary, we can make adjustments in the interest of the army as well.”
The student indicated that the project is still in the testing phase and modifications are being made to its design. However, it does not rule out in the future the possibility of creating a complete exoskeleton. All its components will be 3D printed, and the anatomical features of the patient will be taken into account. Bendowski also confirmed that he is developing several projects simultaneously. There is a smart home system, a remote-controlled airbag boat and a local interactive panel.
