She said Russian company In a statement: “Experts of the Baltic Russian Shipyard have completed the formation of the ice-breaking belt on the new Yakutia nuclear sweeper.”

The statement pointed out that the ice belt of the ship is an area with a width of three meters, which receives the maximum load when the ship hits the ice, and its parts are assembled from high-strength steel with a thickness of 40 mm.

He continued, “In the near future, the specialists will complete the formation of the ship’s hull, and this icebreaker will be ready to be lowered into the water.”

Fourth nuclear icebreaker developed by Russia

“Yakutia” is the fourth nuclear icebreaker developed by Russia within the framework of the government project “22220.” The manufacture of this ship began in the Russian Baltic Shipyard on May 26, 2020, and it is supposed to go into the water before the end of this year.

Russia is developing ships within the framework of the “22220” project to act as icebreakers capable of escorting ships and sea convoys from the Arctic regions, carrying out rescue missions and making way for ships in waters with ice thickness of up to 2.8 m.

These ships were also equipped with independent nuclear power plants with a capacity of 60 megawatts, with a service life of 320,000 hours, and the length of each ship is 173.3 m, width 34 meters, height 15.2 m, and its displacement of water is equivalent to 33,500 tons.

And earlier last July, informed sources in the Russian industry announced that experts in the country will test a nuclear icebreaker.

At that time, the general director of the Russian company “Atomflot” Leonid Irlitsa said: “It was decided to conduct sea factory tests on the new Ural nuclear icebreaker next September, and following the completion of the mentioned tests, the ship is supposed to be handed over to the customer in November of this year.”

He added: “Work on developing and equipping the ship is underway, and the reactor on it has been verified and operational, everything is working fine, and preparations are currently underway for the naval tests of the ship.”

And “Ural” is the third nuclear icebreaker developed by Russia in the framework of the “22220” project, and work on its development began in 2016, and it was brought into the water for the first time in May 2019.
