DECRYPTION – The giant Rosatom is currently building nineteen reactors abroad. The Kremlin ensures the financing of these strategic projects.
Being the leading installer of nuclear power plants on the planet is not enough for Russia. Yuri Borissov, head of the Russian space agency Roscosmos, announced last week that his country was working on a lunar program. “Today we are seriously considering the delivery and installation ofa power station on the moonwith our Chinese colleagues, by 2033-2035”, he said. The project is part of a Sino-Russian agreement of March 2021 on the creation of a “international scientific lunar station” which would be supplied with energy by a nuclear reactor. Which would probably be of modest size.
In the meantime, Rosatom, the Russian giant of this carbon-free energy, is expanding its empire. Despite partial embargoes decided by Great Britain and then the United States following the invasion of Ukraine, Russian nuclear activities largely escape sanctions. This leaves Moscow complete freedom to increase its market share in the rest of the world.
