At the end of February, FIFA and UEFA suspended Russian clubs and teams from participating in international competitions. Because of this, the Russian team was unable to take part in the play-off tournament for the right to reach the final of the 2022 World Cup.

Iran has reached the final of the World Cup and will play in a group with England and the United States. The fourth team will be determined in June, when the play-off between Wales and the winner of the Scotland-Ukraine pair will take place.
