Russia affirmed its readiness to maintain high-level contacts with the IAEA | Europe

President of Russia Vladimir Putin has no plans to meet with the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). Rafael Grossi, however Moscow is interested in maintaining contact between the two parties regarding the conflict in Ukraine.

According to Sputnik news agency, speaking to the press on January 23, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said: “Currently, the President (Putin) has no plans for this meeting, however, he said. that there is an intention, willingness and interest to maintain contact (with Mr. Grossi) and his organization (the IAEA). This is extremely important.” Peskov also said that currently Moscow and the IAEA still maintain dialogue at the working level.

The IAEA is currently increasing its presence in Ukraine to help prevent the risk of a nuclear accident amid the ongoing conflict in the eastern European country.

In a statement last week, the agency said it would soon send permanent representatives at all five of Ukraine’s nuclear facilities, including the Chernobyl plant, which closed following the 1988 disaster.
