The rupiah exchange rate at opening trading Monday (4/11) fell 49 points or 0.31% to Rp. 15,781 per US dollar from the previous Rp. 15,732 per US dollar. This weakening occurred as the market anticipated the United States Presidential Election or US Presidential Election this week.

“Investors are anticipating this week’s US presidential election which, if won by Trump, will have the potential to strengthen the US dollar further,” said currency analyst Lukman Leong in Jakarta, Monday.

According to him, the rupiah is expected to weaken against the US dollar which has strengthened again even though the US NFP and ISM manufacturing employment data are weaker than expected.

Based on US NFP data for October 2024, jobs only increased by 12 thousand, far from the forecast of 113 thousand. ISM Manufacturing came in at 46.5 versus forecast of 47.6.

Apart from that, investors are also waiting for the results of the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting. The FOMC this week is expected to cut interest rates by 25 basis points (bps).

Lukman predicts the rupiah will move in the range of IDR 15,700 per US dollar to IDR 15,850 per US dollar in today’s trading. (Ant/Z-11)
