Square Enix will release 7 games in 2023, none of which will be on Xbox
It’s been four years since we last heard from the Spyro franchise, the classic purple dragon saga that has enthralled many gamers in the past. Since the release of Spyro: Reignited Trilogy, a collection that sought to commemorate titles from the past, but beyond that, no news of a new title in development.
A rumor surfaced in November that a new Spyro title had already started development in mid-2020. This rumor was not widely publicized, as it was just speculation that a studio such as Toys for Bob, which develops other Crash Bandicoot games, was leading a dragon game. Today, to put an end to all the rumors, a very reliable new industry source has denied all that and refused to admit the possibility of a game being developed.
Spyro, a classic saga forgotten in time
Sylux, a well-known industry whistleblower, was asked regarding the rumors and made it clear that it was all untrue. Now, with this sad news, we are facing a 3D platformer drought. Games like Banjo-kazooie, Crash Bandicoot, Spyro, and even Conker are on the decline. Ever since Microsoft bought out Rare, those kinds of games that were the studio’s flagship games have ceased to be relevant and just become cult, something that might be reversed today, but it looks like that won’t be the case.
Spyro’s case is the same, with Activision in the driving seat, it seems interest in Crash Bandicoot has eclipsed the purple dragon and relegated it to mere cameos in games from other developers. That being the case, if you want a brand new Spyro game, you can wait. In the meantime, and if you haven’t tried them, Spyro: Reignited Trilogy is available on all platforms at a very affordable price.
Several of you have asked me to give my opinion on this subject. No new Spyro titles were in development in 2020. https://t.co/VDjXtnhIo7
