SAO PAULO (AP) — Luis Suárez’s teammates and the president of Brazilian club Gremio expressed concern Wednesday following media speculation the striker was contemplating retirement because of persistent knee pain.

The 36-year-old striker who played for clubs like Barcelona and Liverpool has not made any comments to the Brazilian media this week. However, Alberto Guerra, president of the Gremio, defender Reinaldo, and midfielder João Paulo Bitello spoke publicly regarding the difficulties that the veteran soccer player has presented during training sessions and matches.

“(He needs) a lot of injections and medicines,” Guerra told reporters during an event at the club’s stadium. “This is reaching a limit. However, we don’t know what that limit is, when his last game will be.

Guerra indicated that Suárez might even need knee replacement surgery at some point.

Despite the speculation, the Uruguayan striker is expected to play this Thursday with Gremio once morest America in a duel corresponding to the Brazilian league.

Bitello mentioned that Suárez “complains of pain, has an overload in his legs, sacrifices himself,” adding that the player should prioritize his health.

“If that (the withdrawal) happens it will be a great loss for us. We get along very well, he is a great player. But his health is ahead of everything else, ”Bitello expressed to Radio Bandeirantes. “He has had a beautiful career, and we have to take care so that his injury doesn’t get worse. He never talked regarding retiring, but during training he complains regarding the pain.

Suárez arrived at the Gremio in December. He has played 25 games for the southern Brazilian club, scoring 11 goals. His contract expires at the end of 2024.
