After eight weeks of intense competition, the 10th edition of the Rugby World Cup not only captivated sports fans but also significantly stimulated tourism and the economy of the Île-de-France region. Choose Paris Region, the agency in charge of the region’s international attractiveness and tourism, played a key role in this positive momentum.
The Stade de France hosted 10 matches, including the opening, semi-finals and final, bringing together more than 800,000 spectators. 64% of them were tourists ©Stade de France
Pendant the two months of the tournament (from September 8 to October 28, 2023), Île-de-France recorded a 7% increase in tourist attendance compared to the same period in 2022, attracting nearly 9 million visitors, including 600,000 additional visitors.
The most represented nationalities included Americans (+20%), Brazilians (+57%), Chinese (+152%) and Mexicans (+13%). Surprisingly, among the top 10 tourist nationalities, the British and Italians were the only ones from World Cup participating countries.
Hotel occupancy also increased by 7% compared to 2022.. On match days, hotels had similar occupancy rates to other days, indicating a constant presence of tourists. The average price increased by +24% on match days and by +6% on other days. The furnished and seasonal rentals also performed well despite an increase in supply (+62% in September 2023 compared to 2022).
An impact that continues
The Stade de France hosted 10 matches, including the opening, semi-finals and final, bringing together more than 800,000 spectators, 64% of them were tourists, 28% residents and 7% day-trippers. The fan zone at Place de la Concorde also attracted a large crowd. International airline bookings for the three months following the World Cup show an increase of 10% compared to the previous year. The impact of the World Cup therefore seems to extend beyond the event itself.
We will have understood: the 2023 Rugby World Cup was more than a sporting event for Île-de-France. It has been a showcase for the region, attracting not only rugby fans from around the world, but also investors and tourists. As Alexandra Dublanche, President of Choose Paris Region, indicates, this event “contributed to strengthening the image and notoriety of the region”. With the Olympic and Paralympic Games in the sights, “Île-de-France is ready to welcome the world once once more”.
