Rue Bara Traffic Changes: Impact on Brussels-Midi Station District and Good Move Plan

Central axis of the Brussels-Midi station district, rue Bara was made two-way last summer. A change that has attracted more vehicles to the artery, confirmed Brussels Minister Elke Van den Brandt (Groen), recently questioned in committee by MP Gaëtan Van Goidsenhoven (MR), for whom rue Bara has become a “car sewer”.

At the end of June 2022, there were indeed between 6,000 and 8,000 vehicles per working day, compared to 8,000-9,000 in September 2022. “An increase of around 15 to 20%. There are 7% of two-wheelers. This increase in car traffic on Bara Street was expected, given that it went in both directions,” the minister said.

On the other hand, traffic has dropped significantly rue des Deux Gares, which has become one-way: from 12,000-14,000 daily vehicles, to 4,000-6,000. “That is a reduction of almost 2/3. There are 12% of two-wheelers there.” Minister Van den Brandt concludes: “At the district level, we are therefore seeing a decrease in car traffic and an increase in two-wheeler traffic. However, we are also seeing an increase in journey times for car traffic and more specifically during the evening rush hour, when the journey can take up to three additional minutes.”

A discussion with the municipality is planned for this summer on this subject. Some minor improvements are planned in the meantime: “drop-off areas for scooters, the setback of the markings on rue Bara to facilitate the left turn from rue des Vétérinaires towards rue Bara – the narrowness of rue Bara posing a problem when buses turn left – and a delivery area”.
