Ryad (AFP) – Frenchman Rudi Garcia, without a club since leaving Lyon a year ago, will train the Saudi team AlNassr, the club announced, without revealing the details of the contract concluded between the two parties.
“It’s official, Rudi Garcia is the new coach of AlNassr,” the Riyadh club, one of the biggest in Saudi Arabia, wrote on Twitter on Tuesday evening.
“The negotiations were long and difficult” but the obstacles have been overcome, commented on his account its CEO, Muslli Al-Muammar, indicating that Rudi Garcia would arrive next week in the capital.
According to the Saudi newspaper Al Riyada, the 58-year-old coach’s contract runs for two years and provides for an annual salary, including that of assistants, of around 5.8 million euros.
Garcia is the fifth Frenchman to coach the club, following Robert Herbin, Jean Fernandez, Henri Michel, and Patrice Carteron.
He replaces Argentinian Miguel Angel Russo, with whom the team finished the season in third place in the national championship.
Garcia made a career in France, notably in Lille, Marseille and Lyon, with a spell at AS Roma between 2013 and 2016.
Author of the French Championship-Coupe de France double on the bench of Lille in 2010-2011, he won at the end of that season the trophy for best Ligue 1 coach awarded by the UNFP (National Union of Professional Footballers ).
