The US Air Force and RTX (formerly Raytheon Technology) have completed the development and operational testing phase of a new version of the AIM-120D-3 AMRAAM air-to-air missile.
What we know
A press release published on the official RTX website indicates that the tests of the air-to-air missile have been completed. The end point of the trials was the launch of the AIM-120D-3 AMRAAM from a fourth-generation F-16 Fighting Falcon fighter.
The company is now accelerating production of AMRAAM missiles faster than ever. Paul Ferraro, president of Air Power, said.
The AIM-120D-3 is the most advanced variant of the AMRAAM missile. It was developed as part of the F3R program (Form, Fit, Function Refresh). RTX specialists will be able to improve the missile by updating the software. It has a maximum launch range of 180 kilometers.
RTX began upgrading the AIM-120 in 2021. In the middle of last year, the company carried out the first combat test of the upgraded version of the aviation missile. In previous tests, an F/A-18 fighter aircraft was used.
