On Sunday, September 22, the day after the announcement of the composition of Michel Barnier’s government, Éric Ciotti announced that he was leaving the presidency of the Republicans and the party. “It will no longer be possible to work with those who are in Emmanuel Macron’s government, but I call on all elected officials, parliamentarians and activists to join me,” said the elected official who launched his own party at the end of August, called the Union of the Right for the Republic (UDR).
“I respect his beliefs, but I am not not in favour of a rapprochement with the National Rally“, reacts on RTL Frédéric Péchenard, LR vice-president of the Île-de-France region, in reference to the controversy during the legislative elections, during which the LR bigwigs tried in vain to exclude Éric Ciotti because of his alliance with the RN.
“What we can really criticize Eric Ciotti for is the form and the way he did it. He did it a kind of coup d’état as if he were all alone, he decided all by himself without ever speaking to anyone within the Republicans,” denounces Frédéric Péchenard. “He behaved like the leader of La France Insoumise behaves and that is not acceptable in a party like ours.”
