Children in Saxony are more at risk than people aged 60 and over
In contrast, the Saxon Vaccination Commission (SIKO) only spoke out in favor of RSV vaccination for pregnant women at the beginning of November. With a corresponding position paper, SIKO wants to “give vaccinating doctors an overview of the situation regarding RSV infections in Saxony”: In Germany, the obligation to report RSV detection has only existed since July 2023, but in Saxony this has existed since June 2002 says the position paper. On this basis, it can be seen that the RSV-related disease burden and hospitalizations with RSV infections in the first two years of life are significantly higher (>30-fold) than in age groups aged 60 and over. “With regard to the epidemiological effect, only vaccination during pregnancy can currently be recommended with sufficient certainty,” it says. However, the restriction applies that the vaccination should take place between the 32nd and 36th weeks of pregnancy. Because: “In the studies carried out among pregnant women, there was a trend towards prematurity (birth before the 37th week of pregnancy) in the group of vaccinated people, which, however, is not statistically significant (relative risk 1.2 [95% Konfidenzintervall 0,99-1,46])..” The trend might “clearly” be weakened by restricting the vaccination timing to the 32nd to 36th week of pregnancy.
