RSF condemns the murder of journalist Alejandro Martínez

MEXICO CITY.- The organization Reporters Without Borders (RSF)c condemned the murder of the journalist Alejandro Alfredo Martinez Noguez in Celaya, Guanajuato.

Martínez Noguez had already been the victim of another attempted murder, so he had protection from the authorities. His bodyguards were also injured in the attack yesterday.

Violence against journalists in Mexico denounced

“Violence against journalists in Mexico remains unparalleled,” he denounced. Arthur Romeodirector of the office of RSF in Latin America in the statement.

“Alejandro Martínez Noguez, murdered despite being in a state of protection after being attacked two years ago, is the latest episode that illustrates this bloody trend,” he said.

Romeu said that, although there are many factors, the State’s inability to end impunity for these crimes is a crucial issue when talking about violence against Mexican journalists.

“We call on the authorities to thoroughly investigate the circumstances that led to the execution of this journalist, identify and bring to justice those responsible and guarantee reparation measures,” he said.

RSF said press freedom in Mexico will continue to “drastically erode” until journalists are safe.

Murder of journalist Alejandro Martinez Noguez

Yesterday, Sunday, journalist Alejandro Martínez Noguez was the victim of an armed attack while finishing his coverage of a traffic accident.

Martínez Noguez had protection from municipal police and traveled in a patrol car to carry out his journalistic work.

Preliminary information indicates that people aboard a white van opened fire on the car in which the reporter and his bodyguards were traveling.

One of the bullets hit the journalist in the head, so the uniformed officers took him to the Celaya General Hospitalwhere they confirmed his death.

Alejandro Martínez Noguez was a police reporter for 30 years, and had a police page Facebook call ‘The lonely little plainsman’s son’ to share original content, where he had more than 300 thousand followers.

In November 2022, he had suffered another murder attempt, also in the municipality of Celaya.
