RQ-17 ION drone has a variant that can carry organs, vaccines and transport agribusiness materials

Capable of carrying ten kilos, the RQ-17 ION Drone was 100% developed in Brazil and travels up to 100 kilometers
A drone developed entirely in Brazil that can carry up to 10 kilos and travel 100 kilometers. The device can also carry human organs, vaccines and agribusiness materials, such as feed or work tools. This is a development by JETWIND and LabRetail, a company focused on creating technological solution projects for retail and the automotive industry, and a key supplier.

“This opportunity to partner with JETWIND to create a component of the RQ-17 ION drone arose because we received investment from the same economic group. JETWIND is a remotely piloted aircraft engineering company, the more technical name for drones, while LabRetail is a hardware development organization, so we contribute to each other”, explains Sérgio Silvestre, founding partner and CEO of LabRetail, who stayed responsible for developing the system control board.

In agribusiness

He explains that one of the product’s differentiators is its load capacity, in addition to being able to travel long distances. “For the health sector, the RQ-17 is capable of transporting vaccines and human organs, such as a cornea, for example. In agribusiness, it is ideal for carrying farm materials, such as tools or veterinary supplies”, explains the specialist.

Tiago Giglio is the founder and CTO of JETWIND and explains that the RQ-17 ION serves general imaging applications. “It can monitor traffic on highways, detect fires, biological combat in plantations and logistics, for example.” The executive says that the drone was designed in 2017 and the development of the solution took approximately 3 years. The LabRetail board was designed and prototyped this year.

Regarding how the drone works, especially in terms of the distance it is capable of reaching, Giglio says that “in the fixed-wing variant, similar to an airplane, it is possible to reach up to 100 km with radio link and distances of approximately 300 km with satellite communication. Throughout the flight, the aircraft’s position is shown in real time on software with maps, as well as parameters such as altitude, speed and even the traffic of other aircraft in the operating airspace.”

Search and rescue

Giglio also highlights that, in addition to being a product developed 100% in Brazil, the drone’s unique feature is supporting its life cycle with the supply of spare parts and training. According to him, this “significantly increases the availability of the aircraft in various market segments, such as security, search and rescue and special applications”, he concludes.
