On the occasion of the National Day, particular people or causes are put forward by the King. This year, it is the asbl Street nurses which is honored by the ennoblement of its co-founder and managing director, Émilie Meessen. Like other women active in the social sector and more particularly in homelessness, Émilie Meessen thus receives the title of baroness.

This is a royal recognition of our work and that of an entire sector which is doing its best despite the difficult conditions in the face of the scale of the problem.“, declares this humanitarian worker, determined to “continue in this direction“. And to add: “and Street nurses is what it is today, it is above all thanks to the tremendous commitment of each member of the team since its creation“.

Founded in 2005 by Émilie Meessen, then a young nurse, and her friend Sara Janssens, the Street nurses works to create a link with the most vulnerable homeless people, help them get off the streets for good and support them towards stable and sustainable housing. At the same time, the association is working on advocacy to try to convince the political authorities to find structural solutions, particularly in Brussels and Liège where it is active.

In twelve years, Street nurses has already been able to rehouse more than 200 homeless people. “200 people who in their own way encourage those who are still on the street, to believe in it, to hold on, until a solution is found for everyone“, underlines Émilie Meessen.
