On Tuesday, King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima arrived in Belgium for a state visit, sealing for the umpteenth time the bonds of friendship that bind the two countries.
But, while the sovereigns discoursed with solemnity, it was the two queens who caught the eye of the foreign press, marveling at their impressive fashion sense.
On the Danish side, the magazine Billed Bladet looks back on the audacious choices of the two monarchs, praising the “sumptuous jewels and the magnificent embroidery details” of Queen Mathile and “a glamorous queen in a pink ball gown with a flounced skirt” speaking of Queen Maxima.
In the UK, the latter has also been applauded by the Daily Mail, which mentions a Dutch sovereign “dazzling who shone with a thousand lights” and a Queen Mathilde “equally elegant in her dress matched with sumptuous jewels”.
Among the Spaniards, the magazine Lecturas speaks of an “unprecedented style duel” in which the two women “both shone with their long dresses and their diadems. (…) They captured all the attention during the evening.”
Vanitatis, another Spanish media, speaks of a “titanic fight between Maxima from the Netherlands and Mathilde from Belgium during a magical gala dinner”. “We knew this gala would be important. But the two queens took this event to the next level with their outfits. They seemed to come straight out of a Disney movie,” they write, continuing the comparisons to Disney. “Mathilde has chosen a model that reminds us of Elsa in the film ‘The Snow Queen'”, they greet, while admiring a “very elegant” Queen Maxima. “Neither of them disappointed with their outfit during the gala”, concludes the media.
