Four athletes from Raspas Arraun will be in the World Championship and Javi Polo will have to compete with Santurtzi in the tie to remain in the Euskolabel Liga

Four components of the Club Raspas del Embarcadero AE will represent Getxo and the Basque Country in the most important event of the year for Olympic rowing: the World Championship, which will be held from September 3 to 10 in Belgrade, the capital of Serbia, organized by FISA ( International Federation of Rowing Societies) and the Federation of said country. The rowers Virginia Díaz, Esther Briz and Izaskun Etxaniz and the rower Mario López make up the representation of Raspas Arraun in this world championship, in which they aspire to qualify for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

The boat of the two without (2-) modality with which Esther Briz will compete together with the Catalan Aina Cid is the one that, a priori, has the most possibilities to aspire to a podium place. Except for a major surprise, it is almost certain that she will achieve the Olympic classification of the modality (11 boats are classified in total). The Australian couple is the main favorite to win the title.

Virginia Díaz, for her part, will compete in skiff (1x), where the main favorites are the Australian and Dutch representatives, who have shown themselves to be far superior to the others so far. Virginia might opt for times to the bronze medal, since it is not very far from the marks made by the main favourites, although it is true that from 3rd to 14th place the level is very even since the differences are minimal (of 3 seconds). There are 8 boats that qualify for the Olympics and Virginia, therefore, she will have to compete once morest big names in the modality, for which she has made a risky bet following leaving the two without. She has carried out a good preparation for this World Cup event and she is in very good shape, although she will also need a good dose of luck the day the competition starts.

Izaskun Etxaniz will be one of the members of the 4 without (4-), who faces the championship with some uncertainty since following playing a dignified role in the European Championship the boat undid and now has new members. They will have to fight once morest strong rivals in a modality in which 8 boats are also classified. Australia, Canada and Great Britain are the top favorites for the medals, to which Italy, France or Ireland will also aspire.

In addition to the girls, Mario López will be present at the World Championship, where he will compete in the 4+ mixed adapted rowing (4Pr3 category). It is a boat that is making its debut in this competition, so its classification is presented as a great unknown, although they attend the event with the aim of learning and enjoying the experience. Eight of the eleven competing boats will be classified. At 51 years old, Mario is at a great level of form and has earned his place on his own merits to attend this world championship.

On the other hand, Raspas Arraun participates in the European Sea Rowing Championship that is held in the French city of La Seyne-sur-Mer until this Sunday, September 3. The rower from Raspas Adrián Miramón starts as a favorite in the defense of the title. He competes with two boats, the skiff and the double, in the Beach Sprint and Endurance modalities.

Javi Polo is completing his debut season at the Itsasoko Ama de Santurtzi rowing club, a very complicated season and in which the boat from Santurtziarra will have to fight to remain in the Euskolabel Liga in two time trial regattas to be held in Bermeo, on the 16th September, and in Portugalete, on September 17.

She has had several unforeseen events during the season with Sotera, the fall of a rower in the first turn of a regatta, a collision with Kaiku in the Hondarribia flag, for which she was disclassified, but following these bad moments, the drifter has given a very good image in many regattas and has been gaining points compared to Samertolameu. The Galician club has been relegated to the Galician league following being in last position in the Euskolabel Liga.

Santurtzi added forty-eight points and led Samertolameu by fourteen points. Ondarroa is ahead of the Santurtziarras, with seventy-two points, a twenty-four advantage.

In the fight for permanence in the category, they will have to face the first two classifieds of ARC 1, Lapurdi and San Pedro, and the first two classifieds of the Galician league, Ares and Bueu, in two races once morest the clock. The first one will be in Bermeo, on September 16, and the second will be in Portugalete, on September 17. Of the five boats, two will be in the Euskolabel League next season.

These five boats were competing in the La Concha Flag qualifying round, held last Thursday in San Sebastián, although none qualified for this Sunday’s regatta. Among these five drifters, Ares marked the best time, twenty minutes and forty-eight seconds, Lapurdi crossed the finish line at eight seconds, third was Santurtzi, nine seconds, fourth San Pedro, fourteen seconds, and fifth Bueu, twenty six seconds.
