A 32-year-old man shot three people to death this Thursday in two attacks in the city of Rotterdam, in the Netherlands. First, he killed a 39-year-old woman and her 14-year-old daughter in the house where the two women lived. Then, he went to the Erasmus University Center, and opened fire on several people, killing a 46-year-old professor there. After the attack he was arrested. The reasons for his actions are unknown, but it was confirmed that he has a record and a conviction for animal cruelty, according to Dutch judicial authorities.

According to the Police, the attacker is a student at that university hospital and was wearing a bulletproof vest. He was detained at the Erasmus University Hospital helipad. Videos posted on social media showed police giving instructions to medical students to run while heavily armed officers arrived at the scene.

According to the Police, the man began his attack in a house, where he caused a “major” fire and where he shot dead a 39-year-old woman and seriously injured her 14-year-old daughter, in a private apartment. The teenager survived the attack for a few hours, but later died.

Then, he went to the Erasmus Medical Center, where he shot several people, and killed a professor at that university hospital. There, another fire also started, as shown by various recordings on social networks. Finally, the attacker was arrested at the heliport of that medical center.

According to reports, the man has a record and a conviction for animal cruelty. It is believed that he acted alone, as explained by Dutch police and judicial authorities to local media.

In recent months there have been numerous small explosions in homes in Rotterdam, which police attribute to gang fights.

Police chief Fred Westerbeke confirmed to Dutch media that the assailant was a student, who lives in the same city, and that he was arrested while he was still armed with a gun. His identity was not revealed and the motive for the crime is being investigated.

Dutch King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima expressed their regret on social media. “Our hearts go out to the families of the victims of this followingnoon’s violence in Rotterdam,” the statement said. “We also think of all those who lived the terror of these terrible actions,” they added.
