news The substances contained in rosemary, carnosic acid and rosmarinic acid, might contribute to the development of treatments beneficial for the eyes and the brain. New hope for the treatment of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) or the onset of cataracts.

Rosemary to improve your eye health?

In a study published in the journal Investigative Ophthalmology & Visual Science, the team of Professor Stuart Lipton (Sanford-Burnham Institute, in the United States) reports that carnosic acid, a component of rosemary, promotes eye health.

Lipton’s team had previously discovered that the substance helped combat damage caused by free radicals in the brain. This time, the researchers tested the potential of carnosic acid on retinal cells, subjected to oxidative stress in the laboratory. They were able to observe that cells treated with carnosic acid produce antioxidant enzymes that lower free radical levels. A discovery that bodes well for the future treatment of certain diseases. “We are currently developing improved carnosic acid derivatives and related compounds to protect the retina and other areas of the brain once morest a number of degenerative diseases, including age-related macular degeneration and various forms of dementia” , said Stuart A. Lipton.

Rosemary to delay the appearance of cataracts?

Another study also suggests that rosmarinic acid (from rosemary) might restore lens clarity in cases of cataracts. What this means is that the substance might delay the formation of cataracts and reduce its severity. However, there is still a long way to go to determine whether the use of rosmarinic acid is safe and effective in humans.
