Rosatom, the Russian nuclear energy giant, and Water & Energy Solutions, a Moroccan company, recently reached an agreement during the second Africa-Russia Summit and Economic Forum held in Saint Petersburg on July 27-28. . This agreement takes the form of a memorandum of understanding aimed at promoting cooperation in carrying out water desalination, conditioning and purification projects.
Deputy Director General for Development and International Affairs of the State Atomic Energy Corporation ROSATOM, Kirill Komarov, expressed the importance of facing the global problem of lack of water resources. He stressed that solving this problem requires joint efforts by public authorities and companies with the necessary skills. According to him, the signing of this memorandum with Water & Energy Solutions will pave the way for expanded cooperation with Morocco in the field of water desalination and conditioning. ROSATOM plans to apply its technologies to provide green water to both the production sector and the population of the region.
For his part, Mohammed Amine Cherkaoui, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Water & Energy Solutions, expressed his appreciation for this initiative and stressed the importance of trust in a changing world. He considers that the signing of this memorandum is tangible proof of the commitment of the Russian Federation to provide assistance and share its know-how with other countries.
The manager sees ROSATOM’s decision to collaborate with the Kingdom of Morocco as a valuable opportunity for both parties to develop jointly and provide green water at an affordable cost.
ROSATOM has considerable experience in setting up desalination and water conditioning units, both for the industrial sector and for public consumption. Its engineering solutions and specialized equipment for water purification are currently used successfully in Russia and around the world, especially in the energy sector, industrial and petrochemical facilities.
It should be remembered that Morocco has been engaged for years in seawater desalination projects to overcome the water shortage that has affected Morocco for several years.
Indeed, the Director General of the National Office for Electricity and Drinking Water (ONEE), Abderrahim El Hafidi, said in June that Morocco is currently working on the development of a new model for ensure its water security by setting up seawater desalination plants, instead of using only surface water, and to overcome the constraints of climate change, which is the cause of many problems, including that of scarcity some water.
To date, nine seawater desalination plants have been completed, while a major seawater desalination plant will soon be launched in Casablanca, El Hafidi said, stressing that this new management model would allow to effectively deal with water shortage and ensure long-term national water security, regardless of surface water.
In June, Spain decided to grant Morocco a refundable credit of 5 million euros intended for the creation of two new water treatment and desalination stations to combat water stress, which will benefit both country.
