Venezuelan Rosa Rodríguez, 38 years old, advanced this Sunday to the Grand Final of the women’s hammer throw, an athletics event that is part of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games calendar.

Rodríguez, a native of Lara who is participating in the great universal competition for the fourth time and is seeking his first medal, achieved one of the 12 best times during the preliminary competitions, held at the Stade de France, located in Saint-Denis.

She was part of Group B, made up of 16 athletes – of which only 15 made valid attempts – and took sixth place by achieving a distance of 71.76 meters (m).

Highlights of Lot B

Six other women also made it to the final round in Group B. They will now accompany the Barquisimetan in the final phase. Before participating in Paris 2024, she also participated in London 2012, Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020.

Women who certified their passports to the summit stage were the Finnish Krista Tervo (74.79 m, a record for her country), the American Deanna Price (73.79 m), the Danish Katrine Jacobsen (73.04 m), the Italian Sara Fantini (72.40 m) and the Finnish Silja Kosonen (72.11 m).

Rodríguez beat Poland’s Anita Wlodarczyk (71.06 m) by a good margin, who finished seventh, but had a great reason to celebrate because she advanced to the next round.

Group A Highlights

The five remaining finalists emerged from a zone A, made up of 16 throwers, of which only 15 were able to execute throws that met with the judges’ approval.

The Canadian Camryn Rogers (74.69 m) dominated the section, followed by the American Annette Echikunwoke (73.52 m), the Azeri Hannah Skydan (72.55 m), the Chinese Jie Zhao (72.49 m) and the Romanian Bianca Ghelber (71.42 m). The Chinese Jiangyan Li (70.54 m) also finished sixth and could not enter the competition for the gold medal.

The women’s hammer throw Grand Final will be held next Tuesday at 8:20 pm in France (2:20 pm Venezuelan time) in Saint-Denis, where the last match of the 1998 FIFA World Cup in France was played and where the French team, led by Zinedine Zidane, beat Brazil 3-0 to claim the first of two stars.
