Rookie Quarterback’s Spectacular Day at Work: A Story of Sobriety, Family, and Pizza

The Ottawa Redblacks rookie quarterback opted for sobriety instead. He had two special guests at the game. He simply went to a snack bar, accompanied by his father and grandfather, at the conclusion of his spectacular day at work.

“We just decided to share a pizza. It had to be a chill meal because they didn’t have much time. They were to hit the road once more at the end of the evening,” he says.

Scott Crum – the father – and Joe Dossa – the grandfather – had approximately 800 kilometers to cover before returning home, somewhere in the suburbs of Cleveland, Ohio.

“The victory allowed us to have a great time. It was even nicer, because I hadn’t seen my grandfather for several months.”

For once, Dad Scott had no criticisms to make, nor “constructive comments” to offer to his son who completed 62% of his passes in addition to crossing the plateau of 100 yards on the ground.

Crum knows it’s only a postponement. “He still often offers me advice. When I talk to my father, the coach is never far away,” says Crum.

“My dad was the head coach of my high school team. He held this position for a long time. Already, when I was very small, he worked at school. He still found some time to help the people who ran my teams, in the amateur ranks. I can really count myself lucky to have had him as a coach. It was a real blessing,” he says.

“I must admit that I have not always been very grateful, he continues. When I was a teenager, I had a slightly different point of view. When I look back on all that today, I tell myself that it was probably the best thing that might have happened to me.

As a coach, Dustin Crum often used the same three words in his communications: cool, calm and collected. Over time, these three words have helped him develop a mantra that allows the quarterback not to be bothered by anything he can’t control.

“He still texts me those three words before a game.”

These three words were no doubt very useful last Saturday, when the Rouge et Noir trailed 25-6 at the start of the fourth quarter.

“You know what I appreciate the most regarding Dustin? He really has a good head! I did not discover this detail this weekend. I would have offered you the same answer if you had asked me the question last week. Dustin is always focused on the next task he needs to complete. He has a very good attitude when it comes to his work. He doesn’t waste too much saliva. He shows up for work every day and he does what he has to do. I don’t really know what the future holds for him, but if he continues like this, he will continue to grow, ”comments the person who manages Crum this summer, Bob Dyce.

The Rouge et Noir returned to training on Wednesday, and Dyce didn’t want to talk regarding last weekend’s victory. “We have already turned the page. We have to think regarding the Calgary Stampeders now.

The head coach was able to acknowledge that his players gave him his second best day in Ottawa. The spectacular comeback on July 15, 2023 comes just behind the 2016 Gray Cup game.

“That said, if we talk too much regarding our past successes, we forget to prepare for the future,” he insists.

The Rouge et Noir still has, statistically speaking, the worst offense in the Canadian Football League (CFL). The team ranks ninth in a few important statistical categories, such as number of touchdowns, number of offensive touchdowns, number of first downs completed and number of yards amassed, average, per game.

Dustin Crum finds himself in charge of the first offensive team once more this week. The opposite would have surprised us. “There are a lot of differences between the American game and the Canadian game. I continue to learn. When I feel more comfortable, I will be able to take up more space and make my voice heard. In the meantime, I can still exercise some leadership. If I keep my calm, when things are going well and when things are not going well, I can gain the trust of my teammates.

Gosselin returns, Santos-Knox should follow

Two impact players resumed training with the Rouge et Noir on Wednesday. Flanker Shaq Evans and linebacker Jovan Santos-Knox are not expected to face the Stampeders next weekend. If all goes well, they will be in uniform on July 28, when the Hamilton Tiger-Cats are at TD Place.

Bob Dyce is especially delighted with the upcoming return of Santos-Knox. “You reporters like to talk regarding the fact that we’ve used four quarterbacks since the start of the season. Are you aware that we are experiencing the same problem on the secondary line, in the middle of the field?

The infirmary is gradually emptying. Quebec centre-back Anthony Gosselin made his return to the game last weekend and he is happy to announce that “everything went well”.

The former Université de Sherbrooke Vert et Or would not have wanted to miss this memorable game.

“Pardon my anglicism, but we are figuring it out. We found a way to win with our fourth quarterback. And we beat a team that is dominant year following year. The vibe, we felt it following the match. We still feel it,” he said.

“We know we are there. We know we can compete once morest any team. I would say that it’s been a long time since I had the desire to practice so much.
