Liam Lawson says he felt like he was “bluffing” in the first half of his debut race in F1 with Scuderia AlphaTauri. Lawson, introduced as a replacement for Daniel Ricciardo, who is not expected to return until the Qatar Grand Prix, had to deal with different conditions involving many veteran drivers on the grid.
In the end, the race ended without any major problems, pushing AlphaTauri up to 13th place. At Monza, he moved up further and finished 11th. Lawson told the media: “To drive in F1 you need to be confident in the speed of the car.” “It was a very short time frame, so in a sense I was kind of bluffing until I got the feeling. To be honest, I didn’t get that feeling until regarding halfway through the race.”It was my debut race. At Zandvoort, a number of drivers, including Sergio Perez and Charles Leclerc, went off the track at Turn 1 before the red flag was shown with nine laps to go. Lawson believes the moment the rain started to pick up was one of the most important moments of his race. “Right before the red flag came out, heavy rain started falling, and cars were going off the track in many places. It was extremely difficult to keep them from flying off the track,” he said. “This may have been the most important moment.”
