Lisbon, Sep 8 (EFE).- Cristiano Ronaldo scored the winning goal against Scotland (2-1) in the final minutes of the game on Sunday, in a match in which he came on in the second half and where the Portuguese had to come back from a losing start.
This is the second consecutive victory for the ‘quinas’, which means they are the sole leaders of Group A1 of the Champions League with 6 points.
Napoli’s Scott McTominay, who came through at Manchester United, opened the scoring at the Estádio da Luz with a header in the seventh minute following a Kenny McLean cross.
City’s Portuguese centre-back Ruben Dias came out late to mark the defensive line and broke the offside trap.
At that point, Portugal went on the attack, controlling the ball and constantly harassing the opposition goal, but without success against the staunch Scottish defence.
They had up to 15 chances in the first half, but they were unable to score.
However, Rafael Leão was Portugal’s most upright player, he was very unbalanced on the left flank and created clear goal-scoring opportunities, although time and again the Portuguese came up against the Scottish goalkeeper Angus Gunn.
In the second half, Cristiano Ronaldo and Rúben Neves, who had been substitutes for the first 45 minutes of the match, came on.
The Al Nassr player managed a few attempts at the net, but without success, in front of a desperate crowd, who could only breathe easier after Bruno Fernandes‘ goal in the 54th minute, who equalised with a shot from outside the area. It was his 24th goal for Portugal.
Fernandes’ goal was not his only joy of the day, as this Sunday he turns 30 and celebrates the 600th match of his career.
Scotland also threatened the Scottish goal, but Portugal stepped up the pace in the final ten minutes, with two chances hitting the posts.
Finally, in the 88th minute, Cristiano Ronaldo scored the winning goal after finishing easily inside the six-yard box.
After this victory and Poland’s defeat against Croatia (1-0), Portugal leads the group with 6 points.
In the next round, the Portuguese will face the Poles and Croatia will do the same against Scotland.
