Ronaldo faces fine over hidden ads at Euro 2024

According to Ricardo Fort, former head of global sponsorship for Visa and Coca-Cola, UEFA should fine Ronaldo for violating UEFA regulations by advertising a fitness bracelet for Whoop, a company not contracted with the football body, for which Ronaldo is an ambassador.

Ronaldo, 39, allowed Whoop to measure his heart rate during the last match, which was included in the round of 16 matches of the Euro 2024 Championship, against Slovenia, and granted it the right to publish the information on its social media account.

“The post was implying a connection to the event, which is illegal,” Fort said.

In this context, the French radio website “RMC Sport” said on Thursday that “the institution’s measurement of Ronaldo’s data and its publication on social media violates UEFA’s laws regarding the right to own data on players and teams for the relevant institutions contracted with the body.”

The same source explained that “no party is allowed to possess the information, as the Euro is an exclusive competition and owned by the authority, noting that the institution published the measurement of Ronaldo’s heart rate, when he headed to execute the first penalty kick for the Portuguese national team.”

The “WOP” Foundation confirmed that Ronaldo’s heart rate reached 100 beats per minute, which is a large number that reveals the extent of the stress that the Portuguese football star was under, and the possibility that it posed a danger to his health.

It is worth noting that players’ dealings with institutions that are not contracted with the European Football Association, or advertising for them, is considered a violation of the law, and a transgression that may cost them huge financial fines. This is what happened with the former Danish striker, Nicklas Bendtner, who advertised a clothing brand, when celebrating one of the goals he scored.

As a result, Niklas Bendtner was forced to pay 100,000 euros in 2012, while UEFA describes this type of violation as “ambush marketing,” saying that “the person concerned sets up a plan that resembles an ambush, in order to break the laws.”
