The Portuguese national team is preparing to face Croatia and Scotland on September 5 and 8, in the first and second rounds of the European Nations League.
Speaking to Portuguese newspaper A Bola, Ronaldo responded to a question about whether he would be willing to represent the national team as a substitute, saying: “I will always be a regular player in any team I play for until the end of my career, I will remain so, except for one or two times when some coaches treated me badly (smiles).”
“What I feel at the moment, and the words of the coach (current Portugal national team Roberto Martinez) also make it clear, is that I will remain a source of strength for the team and if that is not the case I will admit it myself and I will be the first to leave,” the 39-year-old continued.
Ronaldo added: “But if I leave, I will go with a clear conscience, as always, because I know who I am, what I can do, what I will do and what I will continue to do.”
He concluded: “I see the present in a very positive way because I see that the most important thing is to face every moment and every challenge in a strong way, so I feel happy.”
Ronaldo had faced troubles in his second trip with Manchester United when Dutch coach Erik ten Hag put him on the bench, and the same scenario was repeated in the “Qatar 2022” World Cup by a technical decision from former Portugal coach Fernando Santos.
Ronaldo then left Manchester United to join Al-Nassr in January 2023, while Santos was dismissed from his position after Portugal was eliminated from the quarter-finals of the Qatar World Cup after losing to Morocco 1-0.
