For many video gamers who feel nostalgic from the first notes of the famous Monkey Island music, the moment when the upcoming The Legend of Monkey Island expansion for Sea of Thieves was announced was special: Sea of Thieves meets the probably the most famous pirate in video game history, Guybrush Threepwood. But a central figure behind the adventures of the would-be buccaneer was not involved in the development: series creator Ron Gilbert, who just last year with Return to Monkey Island dived deep into the Caribbean for the first time since the first two parts. He explained via Mastodon: “Nobody told me anything. Happened behind my back”. Terrible Toybox, developer of Return to Monkey Island, clarified: “Disney informed him about the project as a courtesy, but at this point the game was well into development and he wasn’t given an opportunity to be meaningfully involved.”
