DeSantis alongside Trump more promising candidate

The move had been widely expected. According to polls, the conservative hardliner DeSantis is currently the most promising Republican candidate alongside Trump. Trump had already announced in November that he would enter the race for the presidential candidacy for the 2024 election.

DeSantis has been governor of the southern US state of Florida since early 2019. In November 2022, he was confirmed in office with a strong result – which also strengthened his position in view of his striving for higher things.

In Florida, he attracted attention primarily with his right-wing politics. Under him, laws were passed or introduced in the state that discriminate against minorities, curtail academic freedom at universities or interfere with public education by banning teaching. Above all, the Republican has declared war on the so-called wokeness.

Several Republican candidates

The presidential election is scheduled for November 5, 2024. A broad field of applicants is expected for the Republicans. In addition to Trump and DeSantis, former American UN ambassador Nikki Haley has so far made her ambitions official – but she is far behind in polls. Anyone who actually wants to become the party’s official candidate in the end must first prevail in internal party primaries.

US President Joe Biden is running for re-election from the Democrats. As an incumbent, he is unlikely to face any serious competition from within the party in the election campaign. Biden has been in office since January 2021.
