The men pray, the women are locked in a “chicken coop”. The images coming from Centocelle, a neighborhood on the eastern outskirts of Rome, on the occasion of the end of Ramadan, the traditional Islamic fast, are relaunched by Fabio Rampelli, exponent of Fratelli d’Italia. “Here we go once more. Here are the images of the final day of Ramadan, the holiday that breaks the fast for the faithful of Islam, coming from Rome, Centocelle district. The men kneel and pray to Allah, that’s right, each of the approximately two million Muslims residing in Italy have the full right to do so, even publicly. Women, on the other hand, are locked up in a fence and discriminated once morest, they cannot pray, but not even look at men bent towards Mecca”, writes the parliamentarian in a note.
Scene dominated, underlines Rampelli, by the “chicken coop net with blackout cloth” which prevents women “from looking into the sector of the faithful in prayer because they are ‘inferior beings’ and must not have direct or indirect access to the faith”. One might object that there is an individual, domestic or at least religious freedom that allows each citizen to do what he wants if he does not infringe on the freedom of others. “In your home, in the headquarters of an association or in the great Mosque of Monte Antenne. Yes, but here we are in Piazza dei Mirti, on the soil of the Italian Republic where no one should be allowed to violate our laws and our constitutional precepts , risking inducing other citizens to behave in a similar way. Is it right to have a group of professed people publicly demonstrate the illegal and unconstitutional imprisonment of women as such and the impairment of their primary rights?”, asks Rampelli.
For the vice president of the Chamber of Deputies, in addition to not being right, it may also not be legal: “Here the mystery begins… In the meantime, there is not a single left-wing woman, I won’t say a feminist, who is indignant and protests.” In short, on these issues “we need to play less and give answers that combine respect for our civilization and its order with the right of the Muslim faithful to follow their faith”, states Rampelli who filed an opinion on the events in Piazza dei Mirti question to the Minister of the Interior Matteo Piantedosi, while the controversy over the school closed for Ramadan in the Milan area flares up.
