There are two suspects in the investigation by the Rome prosecutor’s office for manslaughter in relation to the death of a 22-year-old girl, Margaret Spada, originally from Syracuse, who died during a rhinoplasty operation in an outpatient clinic in a medical center in the capital. This is the owner of the medical center and his son, both doctors. The girl, who died last November 7, according to what was reconstructed by Adnkronos, would have felt ill after the administration of local anesthesia in the facility where she had arrived with her boyfriend from Sicily. The young woman apparently identified the medical center after seeing an advert on social media. The file is entrusted to prosecutor Erminio Amelio who has delegated the investigations and acquisitions to the Nas carabinieri. In the structure, which does not have an external sign, no documents, medical records, informed consent or registration relating to the intervention were found. In the next few hours the prosecutor will entrust the task of carrying out the autopsy to the forensic medicine institute of the Tor Vergata polyclinic.

«The family, the parents, the sister at this moment are surrounded by the affection of many people and are closed in a silence of pain that cannot be explained in words. They ask to know the circumstances and causes of their daughter’s death”, the words of the lawyer Alessandro Vinci, lawyer for Margaret Spada’s family. «The parents knew where their daughter had gone to have the operation and Margaret had entrusted herself to an Italian surgeon, she did not follow fashions or trends where one often goes in Eastern or North African countries. That structure was supposed to provide guarantees but it will be up to the investigation to ascertain this”, explained the lawyer.

What are the key responsibilities of outpatient clinics during surgical procedures like rhinoplasty?
**Interview with Dr. Elena Rossi, Medical Ethics Expert**
**Editor:** Thank you for joining us today, Dr. Rossi. We’re discussing a tragic incident involving the death of 22-year-old Margaret Spada during a rhinoplasty operation in Rome. Can you provide some context on the responsibilities of outpatient clinics in such procedures?
**Dr. Rossi:** Thank you for having me. Outpatient clinics must adhere to strict medical regulations and guidelines, especially when performing surgical procedures like rhinoplasty. They are responsible for ensuring patients are fully informed, that proper medical records are kept, and that consent forms are signed prior to any intervention. Unfortunately, in this case, it appears that these protocols were not followed.
**Editor:** Reports indicate that both the medical center owner and his son, who performed the surgery, are suspects in a manslaughter investigation. What implications does this hold for medical professionals in similar positions?
**Dr. Rossi:** This situation raises serious concerns about accountability in the medical field. If negligence is proven, it could set a precedent for stricter regulations and oversight of outpatient procedures. Medical professionals must also understand that the consequences of their actions can severely impact patients’ lives, and they must always prioritize safety and ethical standards.
**Editor:** The investigation has revealed a lack of medical records and informed consent forms at the clinic. How critical are these documents in medical practice?
**Dr. Rossi:** Medical records and informed consent are essential for patient safety and legal protection. They provide a clear history of the procedure, outline potential risks, and confirm that patients are aware of these risks. The absence of such documentation can complicate investigations and accountability in cases of medical mishaps.
**Editor:** what steps do you think should be taken moving forward to prevent similar tragedies?
**Dr. Rossi:** It’s crucial to enhance regulatory frameworks governing outpatient clinics. Regular inspections, mandatory documentation, and stringent protocols for patient safety must be enforced. Importantly, public awareness about choosing accredited facilities based on comprehensive information, not just online advertising, can also help prevent such incidents.
**Editor:** Thank you, Dr. Rossi, for sharing your insights on this troubling case. It’s important that we continue to advocate for patient safety and ethical medical practices.
**Dr. Rossi:** Thank you for having me. Let’s hope for justice for Margaret Spada and for reforms that will protect future patients.
