There are two suspects in the investigation by the Rome prosecutor’s office for manslaughter in relation to the death of a 22-year-old girl, Margaret Spada, originally from Syracuse, who died during a rhinoplasty operation in an outpatient clinic in a medical center in the capital. This is the owner of the medical center and his son, both doctors. The girl, who died last November 7, according to what was reconstructed by Adnkronos, would have felt ill after the administration of local anesthesia in the facility where she had arrived with her boyfriend from Sicily. The young woman apparently identified the medical center after seeing an advert on social media. The file is entrusted to prosecutor Erminio Amelio who has delegated the investigations and acquisitions to the Nas carabinieri. In the structure, which does not have an external sign, no documents, medical records, informed consent or registration relating to the intervention were found. In the next few hours the prosecutor will entrust the task of carrying out the autopsy to the forensic medicine institute of the Tor Vergata polyclinic.

«The family, the parents, the sister at this moment are surrounded by the affection of many people and are closed in a silence of pain that cannot be explained in words. They ask to know the circumstances and causes of their daughter’s death”, the words of the lawyer Alessandro Vinci, lawyer for Margaret Spada’s family. «The parents knew where their daughter had gone to have the operation and Margaret had entrusted herself to an Italian surgeon, she did not follow fashions or trends where one often goes in Eastern or North African countries. That structure was supposed to provide guarantees but it will be up to the investigation to ascertain this”, explained the lawyer.

How can patients verify the accreditation and safety measures of a medical clinic before undergoing elective surgeries?
**Interview with Dr. Laura Gallo, Medical Ethics Expert**
**Editor:** Thank you for joining us today, Dr. Gallo. We’re discussing the tragic case of 22-year-old Margaret Spada, who died during a rhinoplasty procedure in a Rome medical clinic. How significant do you consider the implications of this incident for outpatient medical practices?
**Dr. Gallo:** Thank you for having me. This case is profoundly concerning and raises critical questions about safety standards in outpatient settings. The fact that the clinic lacked proper documentation and signs is alarming and calls for an immediate review of regulations governing such facilities.
**Editor:** What specific regulations do you believe need to be reviewed or implemented to prevent incidents like this in the future?
**Dr. Gallo:** Firstly, there needs to be stricter oversight on the accreditation of outpatient clinics. All facilities should be required to display clear information, maintain comprehensive medical records, and ensure that informed consent forms are meticulously documented. Additionally, emergency protocols must be standardized to handle adverse events effectively.
**Editor:** The investigation points to possible negligence on the part of the clinic’s owners. What repercussions might they face if found guilty of manslaughter?
**Dr. Gallo:** If convicted, the clinic’s owner and his son could face significant legal penalties, including imprisonment. Manslaughter carries serious charges, and there could also be civil repercussions, such as financial compensation to the victim’s family. This case might also lead to a broader inquiry into similar practices across the country.
**Editor:** How do you recommend patients ensure their safety when seeking cosmetic procedures in the future?
**Dr. Gallo:** Patients should do thorough research before choosing a provider. This includes checking for valid medical licenses, reading reviews, and, whenever possible, seeking referrals from trusted sources. Additionally, patients should always ensure that the facility is accredited and that they understand the risks involved in any procedure.
**Editor:** Thank you, Dr. Gallo. Your insights are invaluable, especially as we navigate the implications of this unfortunate event.
**Dr. Gallo:** Thank you for shedding light on this critical issue. Let’s hope this tragedy leads to reforms that enhance patient safety in all medical practices.
